MODULE SUPPLEMENT: IMMUNE SYSTEM
Non-Specific Immunity

Non-specific immunity is often overlooked and yet is extremely important, both because there is really a dynamic interaction between the specific and non-specific systems and because many of these normally protective areas become less effective or have altered function as we age.

Components of the non-specific immune system include:

  • Physical barriers
  • The acidic nature of the stomach
  • Cilial action of the lungs
  • Cough reflex
  • Chemicals in the blood cells
  • Phagocytosis
